Elliot G. Hicks is a dispute resolution professional focusing on Mediation and Arbitration in West Virginia. Elliot has been a trial lawyer since 1981, with his former litigation practice including product liability, premises liability, construction law, employment law, corporate and commercial litigation, insurance law cases, medical malpractice defense, and higher education law. Elliot was inspired to become an attorney by the lawyers who led the Civil Rights Movement. He spent his first two years of his undergraduate education at Washington and Lee University, where he was the first African American elected to the Executive Committee of the Student Body. He later transferred to West Virginia University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1978 and his Juris Doctor in 1981.
Over the course of his career, Elliot has tried cases to verdict in many of the counties in West Virginia as a partner in several law firms. Elliot has been peer-review rated by Martindale-Hubbell and has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America for the areas is Commercial Litigation, Mediation as well as a West Virginia Super Lawyer in Mediation and Commercial Litigation.
Elliot is also the President and Owner of Ellerbee Construction, Inc., a company that offers on-road material hauling at construction sites and other services that general contractors may need, but have difficulty finding when searching for a minority-owned working partner for projects.
Elliot has many other personal interests and community service relevant to his mediation practice, including serving as President of the West Virginia State Bar from 1998 to 1999 and Representative on the West Virginia State Bar Board of Governors from 1993 to 1996. Elliot was also appointed by Governor Joe Manchin to the Board of Governors of Concord University, serving an eight-year term from 2009 to 2017 as well as the Chairman of the Board of Governors from 2013 to 2017. He has been recognized for his outstanding contributions and service to the legal profession as well as his characteristics of justice, scholarship, and advocacy of peace and human and civil rights with numerous awards including the Justicia Officium Award by the West Virginia University College of Law in May 2021 and the Martin Luther King Holiday Commission Governor’s Living the Dream Award in 2019.
